Dell XPS 13 2020 Edition: an (almost) borderless screen for an unprecedented display surface

Dell has managed to melt the last imposing edge located under the screen of its ultraportable XPS 13. This new version will be offered on the brand’s website in a few days and should, while offering a larger display area, provide up to 19 hours of autonomy.

Dell was the first manufacturer to reduce the side screen borders on an ultraportable, in this case the XPS 13. Then it was the turn of the top line to wipe a plane. Finally, the Texan manufacturer will be the first to succeed in the feat of reducing the wide black bottom strip of a 13.4-inch slab to a narrow border. And it’s magnificent, judge for yourself!

A screen that leaves you speechless

Always available in black (first) and white (secondly), the Dell XPS 13 vintage 2020 therefore sees its display improved both in form and in substance. With the virtual disappearance of the lower black band, the 13.4 inch screen from Dell changes to 16:10 format to offer a somewhat unusual screen definition such as Full HD + (1920 by 1200 pixels) or 4K + ( 3840 by 2400). All machines in Full HD + will be equipped with a classic or touch screen; in 4K + no choice, touch will necessarily be required.

On the technical and compatibility side, Dell certifies that the panels offer a brightness of 500 cd / m2 and a contrast ratio of 1800: 1 for FHD + against 1500: 1 for 4K +.
The non-tactile versions will have a matt appearance and the others, treated against reflections and fingerprints. In addition, compatibility with the HDR 400 as well as 100% coverage of the sRGB range will be ensured on all models. The XPS 13 4K + will also be eligible for DCI-P3 certification (90%).

Up to 19 hours of autonomy in perspective

Inside the magnesium, aluminum and carbon fiber alloy case, Dell keeps the components that equip the current fleet of ultraportables. 10th generation Intel Core processors (Ice Lake i3-G1, i5-G1 and i7-G7), LPDDR4 (4 GB) or LPDDR4x (8 to 32 GB) memory soldered to the motherboard are the first line, and storage capacities range from 256 GB to 2 TB.

Connectivity is still limited to 2 Thunderbolt 3 sockets (USB Type-C), a headset / microphone combo and a microSD card reader. Dell specifies that a USBC / USB adapter will be supplied as standard with the machine. For connections to the Web, it is compulsory Wi-Fi with two Wi-Fi modules 6 offered in the configurator (Killer AX 1650 in Intel or AX500-DBS in Qualcomm), Bluetooth 5 compatible.

In terms of autonomy, Dell announces up to 19 hours on a machine equipped with Full HD +. Finally, to the question of compatibility with Intel’s Project Athena (the ultraportable of the future), the representatives of the brand assured us that certain models would meet the specifications of the founder, but without expanding further.

Dell will launch a version of Dell XPS 13 under Windows 10 (Home or Pro 64 bit) and another, under Ubuntu 18.04 (Developper Edition). Their prices are given from 1000 dollars (Windows) and 1199 dollars (Ubuntu). The availability of the black model under Windows is planned from January 7 in France, the Ubuntu version will not land until February (the 4th).
